Amy Carmichael

Whether you agree or not with the practices and doctrine of different Denominations, we need to remember God’s vessels who  were faithful to Him and  to the truth of His Word by imitating Jesus Christ.  They did this by their words and actions, showing God’s unconditional Love to everybody in both big ways and small.

Amy Beatrice Carmichael ( Born December 16,1867 Died January18, 1951) was a Protestant Christian Missionary in India, She was commissioned by the Church of England Zenana Mission and opened an Orphanage and founded a Mission in Dohnavur.

Amy served in India for fifty-five years and authored many Books about the Missionary work there and wrote some beautiful Songs.

Amy Carmichael was a woman after God’s own heart. Committed to God in a world full of lip service and loose morals. Amy lived the life she believed in, seeking God and His direction with unwavering determination and willingness to put Him first, regardless of the cost .

Amy believed God Knows The future He Wants For You…….

When Amy was growing up in Ireland, she desperately wanted blue eyes. With the faith of a child, she truly believed that God would change her brown eyes to blue if she asked Him, so she fervently prayed for blue eyes, but on looking in the mirror next morning she was disappointed to find them still brown.

Later during her years in India when Amy became aware of the tragic plight of many girls from poor families who were sold to Hindu Temples as prostitutes, Amy in 1901 began rescuing these young girls, risking her own life and bringing them to her home in Dohnavur to raise them and teach them how much God Loved them. Amy would stain her skin with coffee grounds and dress in Indian clothing so she could sneak into the temples unnoticed.

One day has she dressed, Amy realized that her disguise worked only because she had brown eyes, because blue eyes would have given her away. At this moment Amy realized that one of the reasons God had said no to her prayer as a child was because He had a plan for her future that involved the lives of hundreds of other precious little ones. God had known her future even when she was a little girl half a world away and while she was still being formed in the womb, and even before the world was created He knew and He planned her future.

The Family she built up continues to this day, in  Dohnavur village which is in Tamil Nadu, near the Southernorthan point of India.  It is now led by those who were themselves brought up in the community. A home and family is provided for Children in moral and/or physical danger who have no one to care for them. Total responsibility is taken for such Children. A Hospital is run and staffed predominately by Women who grew up in the Fellowship.

Some of Amy Carmichael’s words of wisdom…..

One can give without Loving, but one cannot Love without giving.”

While serving in India, Amy received a letter from a young lady who was considering life as a Missionary, She asked Amy, “What is Missionary life like?” Amy wrote back saying simply…..

“Missionary life is simply a chance to die to self.”

Great story of Amy Carmichael, how God prepared her to reach the lowest caste and poorest , physically and spiritually . Shows , doesn’t matter how you look , God can use you , He only wants your availability , He got it from her.

    Thanks Anne.

Hi Anne. Thanks for the link. I was born a Christian, but do not know much about it. This blogging thingy and your sharings, indeed help me to learn lil by lil 🙂

Reffering to our conversation in my page (about Honesty), I was confused, whether white lie is good or not. You put some examples of good people who did white lie. It made me more confuse (because they are good and do it for good reason). But then you said “there is wrong that is very wrong and has no excuse and these people must be rebuked and warned, heart repentance will bring God’s forgiveness and good feelings as you shared”. Then, I got a conclusion that no matter black or white, a lie is a lie.

Oh ya, I also tried to find Bible verse about it. It is in Colossians 3:9 “Do not lie to each other..”. I believe, by this verse, God doesn’t differentiate any kind of lying. 🙂

    With love,
    Etha 🙂

Hi smiletha Hmmmm that is a lie it’s not your real name, but I’m sure you did not use it for evil reasons or to hurt anyone did you. It was God who told Caleb and Joshua to be Spies and also planned for Amy Carmichael to rescue those little girls from prostitution and all the rest I mentioned and there are many others who covered over for good reasons. Many Jews lives were saved during the war because of the underground movement and Spies.

I don’t think we can use the words Lie really in regards to these people because what they did, had nothing to do with evil and that is what a real lie is all about as far as God is concerned. Every time the word Lie is used in the Scriptures it is talking about evil deception so perhaps we need to think up another name for these peoples actions like you did with smiletha. 😀

I will continue responding to your other statements on your Blog, I’m pleased I have encouraged you, and please feel free to ask any questions you feel a heart need to know about.

You asked notsamson what Amy Carmichael did wrong if her life story was so impressive? yes she like others was motivated for good but you could say she lied and deceived some would legalistically say this But Amy by disguising herself and pretending to be an Indian woman was able to rescue many girls sold to Hindu Temples as prostitutes. In the Bible there were others who also disguised themselves or hid their true identity, not for evil but for good, one of them was another woman, her name was Esther, she saved the Jews of her day by concealing her true identity and became a Queen and then there was Rahab who lied to protect Caleb and Joshua who were spies doing God’s work.

I’m not saying we should tell lies, even white ones they can be for very wrong reasons but when our motivation is for good and not for bad then it is not evil but this is something we need to be very sure of in our heart. Have you heard about Brother Andrew and his fellow workers, they disguise themselves and tell false stories to hostile authorities to do God’s work but their motivation is always for good, or what about Emma Edmonds a master of disguise, a fearless and ingenious Canadian woman of the 19th century. Don’t forget about Superman!

What we may think is wrong or evil may not be this is why God tells us not to judge others with our fleshy agenda only God knows their Destiny this is what we need to remember but most important we are not to judge God our Creator or question His goodness.
