  5. This brought a smile Anne. Thanks.
But then, I am a literal person so I wondered why the need to change the order – and what happened to the important second and third commandments. Maybe this could be re-written, keeping the original content and sequence? I like the concept, but it should be true to the Word.

Hi Angela, I’m a literal person too if God said it I believe it and that settles it even if others don’t understand it or agree with it. Apart from the fact we are enjoying the Hillbilly Ten Commandments they are in their interpretation correct they have included all the 10 commandments but condensed them, some Translations do the same, in Truth the 10 commandments that Moses received from God are not as most Translations have written them, check out the K.J.V and we will continue if you would like to do this.

      • Anne, I have no objection to having fun and I enjoy the ‘Hillbilly’ rendition, but as I said I would enjoy them more if they were in keeping with the original.

The second commandment is not there – not to have any graven images or bow down to them. (Put nothing before God [Hillbilly 5] does not cover it)
The third commandment is not there – not to take the Lord’s name in vain. This is not covered by ‘No telling tales or gossiping’ or Hillbilly 8 ‘watch your mouth’ though these two could refer to commandment 9 (not bearing false witness)
I believe the first three commandments are the important ones, as they refer to God, but the second and third ones are left out. (It is interesting to note that many cults leave out 2 and 3, dividing others to make 10. Please don’t think from that comment I am inferring a cultish thing here. I am not.)
Hillbilly 2 covers commandment 5 – but why move it to second place?
The last five are also in the wrong order – according to the KJV – but that doesn’t really bother me.

Ann, I am not against humour. I enjoy a good joke – and I enjoyed this – but when it comes to using the Word of God, I like to see it accurate, especially when it refers to the reverence which God demands for Himself.

Hi Angela the whole idea of this Joke is because people can’t understand the wordage K.J.V in the Scriptures they condensed it and changed it to suit those who want instant instead of detail ,which is what a lot of Translations do or some add to Scripture and change the meaning that way, which means they loose the real meaning of a Scripture which is what I explained before to Karin.

Let’s just look at the first Hillbilly Commandment – Just one God – Wow as you shared they deleted a lot of the wordage but it is True it can be summed up to read this, but why does He tell us to have only one God, is He conceited, No He is protecting us which what you shared shows and so does the Scriptures when Moses was given them by God.

Sadly today there are those who teach the Law is obsolete we don’t have to keep it we are under the new Covenant in Christ Jesus and we are forgiven, which is True our past sins have been forgiven but this is condensing Scripture and reading it out of context, Jesus died not only so we would not be punished for our past sins but so that we would be set free from the bondage of sin and sin no more, we can’t do this by the flesh which has to be put to death, we do it by the empowering of The Holy Spirit.

Romans 33: 1 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

John 8:34-36 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

1John 3:1- 11 (9) No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

          • Anne I agree with what you say and I find nothing wrong with the Hillbilly first commandment. “Just one God” is OK. In fact, it isn’t very abbreviated, since the first commandment merely says “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me”.

I have no fault with the abbreviation of the commandments, as long as the original meaning is retained – which it did in the first one. But I repeat, where are the second and third commandments? They are left out entirely – not abbreviated, but omitted.

Why is ‘Honour your father and mother’ which is commandment number 5 placed as commandment number 2? and ‘No gossiping or telling tales’ which could be commandment number 9 placed at number 3? . . . both above the fourth of the four referring to God, which should come first?

If these were abbreviations of the actual commandments, in the right order, there would be no objection whatever, but I see no point in leaving out the most important ones, which can be expressed in a minimum of words. For example, commandment 2 could be simply expressed as “No bowing to statues of false gods” and commandment 3 as “Don’t swear using God’s Names”

Alternatively, if the Hillbilly version was presented as a talk by a Hillbilly pastor, without stating they were the ten commandments (which they are not) they would give a good laugh.

Anne, my intention is NOT to offend you in any way. I think you know me well enough to know I wouldn’t do that. However, when I decided not to say anything, I was strongly convicted by the Lord and had to return.
            Christian love,

Hi Angela you have not offended me in anyway, in truth you have helped me to show that condensing is not always the way to go sometimes detail is needed or there is error, which I have found in many Translations the least is the K.J.V but I don’t worry the Lord always shows me when there is error.

When I first started blogging I was warned to keep my comments short, as you know we don’t do this in Australia but as I write as I feel lead, I never knew what to delete, I still don’t but most I Blog with don’t mind the length but some have used it as a excuse to delete my comments and block me, you may remember how upset I was because I thought you had done this too. I may use this Joke as an example that error can happen because of lack of detail and trying to make the Scriptuers acceptable to those who like it short and sweet, it’s ok some times if error dosen’t happen.

Thank you so much Angela and God bless you for your faithfulness.

Hmmm I’m tipping my hat, no I’m nodding my head, but I’m defiantly not standing up! 😀

Very True sometimes condensing can be good but sometimes as we find in the Scriptures we need detail or we miss the plot but True most today want the Scriptures to be like their instant Coffee, now don’t get me wrong I like word studies but they can lead to much pondering on the Scriptures and one Scripture will lead to another so I take it to The Lord and we talk about it.

Let’s just look at the first Hillbilly Commandment – Just one God – Wow you should read what they deleted but it is True it can be summed up to read this, but we miss why? is God conceited No He is protecting us.
