Does God Willingly Allow Pain and Suffering?

Below is an explanation I received of why God allows Pain and Suffering but does He willingly?…

As a Man was having his hair cut and his beard trimmed in Barbershop they were talking about various subjects, when they eventually touched on the subject of God, the Barber said; ‘I don’t believe that God exists.’

‘Why do you say that?’ asked the Customer. ‘Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn’t exist. Tell me, if God exists would there be so many sick people? would there be Abandoned Children?

If God existed there would be neither Pain nor Suffering! I can’t imagine a Loving God who would allow all of these things.’ The Customer thought for a moment but didn’t respond because he didn’t want to start an argument. The Barber finished his job and the customer left the Shop.

Just after he left the Barbershop he saw a Man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair, he looked dirty and unkempt. The Customer turned back and entered the Barbershop again and he said to the Barber:

‘You know what? Barbers do not exist.’

‘How can you say that?’ asked the surprised Barber. ‘I am here, and I am a Barber and I just worked on you!’

‘No!’ the Customer exclaimed. ‘Barbers don’t exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair like that Man outside and some have untrimmed beards too.’

‘Ah but Barbers DO exist! That’s what happens when People do not come to me.’

‘Exactly!’ affirmed the Customer. ‘That’s the point! God, too, DOES exist! That’s what happens when People do not go to Him and don’t look to Him for Help. That’s why there’s so much Pain and Suffering in the World, so much Anger, yes so much Evil.’

I think it is good explanation but it still leaves questions unanswered. It always makes me ask; “Well why do people suffer who are seeking the Lord with all their hearts? or why are Christians hurting? and why do some Christians do wrong? or why do Children who God says are innocent until they are able to understand, why are they Abused, Abandoned and Suffer? because this can stay with them for the rest of their lives unless they are Healed, why does God not Stop Evil, He is God of the Impossible isn’t He?

Well you only have to read the Bible Trusting in Jesus our only Spiritual Teacher to know the answer.

Satan controls this earth and all the evil that is propagated by Man and has done so since Mankind chose to Sin and he has the right to put us to the Test as He did Jesus, Abraham, Job, Peter, Paul etc.  The Scripture confirms to say that even Christians do evil to bring good out of it is Slander how much more so to say it about God.

1John 5: 19- 20 We know that we are of God and the whole World lies under the Sway of the Wicked One. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is True and we are in Him who is True, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God and Eternal life.N.K.J.V

As we look at Paul’s life who was a very Godly man and who put God first, we see that He suffered greatly but look how he handled it and of course Jesus said in this world we will have trouble no matter how much you seek to do right, the only difference with Christians is Jesus is with us to carry us through the Storm. I feel it has to do a whole lot with our attitude too and how we look at trouble, just look at Paul’s attitude and how he looked at all the suffering and pain he went through and this was for doing good. He gave Thanks and to God and Rejoiced that He was with him through it all, he did not blame Him for afflicting  him or for willingly allowing or for planing the evil that afflicted him.

Lamentations 3: 33 For God doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the Children of Men.

Jeremiah 29 :11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of Peace and not of Evil, to give you a Future and a Hope.

We too will suffer when we follow Jesus as He did, we will be hated, slandered, abused and ignored even by some in our own Families and also in the Church, we may even be Martyred but  our reward will be great.

So as the Barber Message tells us we need to seek the Lord because without Him we experience all type of grief’s and problems that we can’t handle in a Godly way.

But God does not plan to bring suffering to us or willingly allows it but He will bring us through it ? ” We are to Love Him with all our Heart, Mind, Soul and yes with our All, we cannot Trust someone in our Heart whom we believe will deliberately hurt us or willingly allow it even if we claim it’s for our good and if we don’t Trust we cannot Love, we will have fleshy fear instead and not reverence which is what God tells us about unbelievers and Carnal or Baby Believers.

Yes sometimes we need to be disciplined and this hurts but God let’s us reap the evil we sow to bring us to Heart Repentance just as He did with the Prodigal Son but He Molds and Shapes us by the Fruit of The Spirit and so we will be  strengthened by what we go through so we can endure, which is confirmed in the Scriptures, Isaiah 43:1-3  He knew us before we were Conceived and it was not His will we are hurt, it grieves Him greatly but He Protects our Soul, He does not crush our spirit.

Psalm 97:9-11 For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. Ye that Love the Lord, hate evil, He preserveth the souls of His Saints, He delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked. Light is sown for the Righteous and gladness for the Upright in Heart.

It is not only for this life we live which is like a Split Second in Eternity, God is preparing us for His Kingdom where we will know Complete Joy Eternally because there is no Death, Suffering or Pain of any kind there.

Why does God not stop evil? well we may never know how much He does intervene to help us but sometimes He does so Miraculously, we also have Doctors and Nurses, Medicine and Natural remedies these are all God’s Tools and He sends Carers and Support for Children and People in need.

.But if He did stop all evil then that would be the end of the World as it was in Noah’s time and some would be lost Eternally.

It is not God’s will anyone Perishes meaning to be Eternally separated from Him in Torment but He is giving those whom He knows as His own, time to come to Heart repentance and not one of us will be lost.

Although there is evil in all of us until we are Perfected, there is The Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives too and even with Non Christians because God knows His Redeemed Children from the beginning of time He knows all things and that we will repent and accept His free gift of Salvation in Christ Jesus and so by this foreknowledge He predestines us to be conformed into the image of Jesus as we work out our Salvation but not meaning work for it.

Repentance is not a one off thing as The Lord’s Prayer shows. We need to come to Heart repentance daily accepting the forgiveness we have in Jesus Christ and turning away from evil and doing good and we can because Jesus has set us free and no Temptation will be greater than we can bear.

We are all on a journey with The Lord yes even His Lost Sheep whom He goes after and brings back to the Fold and until we are Perfected in Love we can still choose to do things in the Carnal flesh and cause harm both to others and to ourselves until our flesh has been put to death and we are Born Again and Perfected in Love which we are all to Aim for. Jesus is our Advocate and only Intercessor, when we Repent we are forgiven.

Because of God’s great Love for us He is patient not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to Heart repentance. But He did not make us Puppets,  we are able to choose right from wrong and as the Carnal flesh is put to death by the Holy Spirit as we choose to walk in Righteousness (Romans 8 :12-15- Romans 6 -Colossians 3:4-6 -Galatians 5:24 -26) as we Aim to be Perfected in Love  (Matthew 5:48 – Hebrews 6:1-Philippians 3:14-16 -2Timothy 3:17-1John 4:16-19- 1John 2:4-6- 2Corinthians 13:11) we become more and more Holy and we than walk as Jesus did on earth and we have His Mind and He does not choose to Sin .

When we do a lot that is evil, it can be because we are hurting greatly and although this does not make it right our God is a Compassionate and Loving and He will forgive us if we Repent which means being really sorry and not continuing to do evil but to do good which we can only do with His Strength as we seek Jesus to lead us.

Sadly there are people who are just evil and never come to Heart Repentance but we are not to judge others Eternal Destiny because only God knows their Heart but because we care we are to warn others if what they are doing is hurting themselves or other people. They might not listen or they may even reject us but we can accept whatever their response is without holding on to anger and hurt by asking God to help us deal with these feelings.

If someone needs to Chastise and warn us we appreciate their concern and ask God to show us if there is Truth in what they say and we will know if we are in the wrong because we will try to justify or cover up and we will have no Peace. This means we need to come to Repentance make amends when necessary and then turn from evil and do good .

By warning people we may give them doubts about what they are doing or believing and cause them to question why and maybe they will seek help from the Lord to have the Victory over whatever they are doing wrong or believing in error and if they will not listen even when others have warned them too then we can only leave it in the Lords hands and continue to Pray for them. This does not mean we judge them by our standards understanding or feelings but only by God’s Truth and we do so because we care and we do it with Love.

So why does God not stop all the evil in the World? He will one day but for now He remembers His Promise and that Jesus is our Ark so we need to hold onto His Promise in……

Romans 8:28 We know that all things works together for good to them that Love God, to them that are called according to His Purpose K.J.V

  1. Nehemiah Project says:

From day one, God created Mankind with the ability to decide and choose. He even presented a choice, with full knowledge of what the choice would be. God did NOT tempt them…He presented them with a clear choice and allowed them to make that choice. It was He who put that tree in the Garden, in the first place.
Mankind has made many choices since we have put our nasty little toes to the ground. God will not violate how He created us to be. So, even if someone makes an awful choice, God allows it. Sometimes, these choices are at the expense of others.
No matter what, God is always on the Throne, always watching and always loving. There are times He intervenes, even with the miraculous – and times He may move someone to intervene at whatever level – and times it seems He does nothing, at all. However, I do believe, that even in those times, He is still at work on a bigger picture that He sees and we cannot see.
On an aside, the name of your blog reminds me of a visit I had to Freemantle when I was in the Navy, way back…well…I think the kangaroo may have just been invented. Spent a couple days with a nice Christian couple with a young tot. They showed me some of the sights of that beautiful country.

    • Thank you Nehemiah Project for Visiting and sharing your thoughts, when my Blog was being Setup by a friend for me we could not find a Name for it that WordPress approved of so I prayed and God gave me Freedomborn, I don’t hear Him Audibly but I do have assurance in my heart. When I put Freedomborn in my Spell check it showed Freedom first which is the Focus of my Blog….. “Freedom in Christ Jesus”

I agree with you Nehemiah Project, God does not want Puppets, He has given us free will to choose good or evil but He does not do evil or willingly allow it but knows it will happen. Yes all good things come from God including Healing regardless of the Tools He uses which all come from His Creation.

We live in a fallen world which Satan controls and it is He who temps us to do evil not God. Satan also motivates others to hurt us or they choose to or do so because of their sinfulness, Chance and Accidents happen too and we reap the evil we sow and if we follow Jesus we will be hated and persecuted and may be even Martyred. Yes Life brings Heartache and suffering not God but He knows we will suffer and gives us His Strength to endure as confirmed by Scripture.

The Scriptures tell us also to say that even Believers do evil to bring good out of it is Slander and willingly allowing it is the same, in our Law it means you are an accomplice. Romans3:8

If God was to end all evil now as He did in the World Flood, He would have to end the World and some He knows as His own would Perish and so He is Patient but is no doubt very grieved to see the evil in our World and yes sadly in Churches too but thankfully not one of us that are His will be lost.

It is Deception when it is said that everything that happens comes from God or that He willingly allows Evil but perhaps to help you understand why it is, you may like to read about my Childhood on the Link below…….

Hey! my friend! thinking of you. Such an insightful post and thought power for all to consider. God is love, and love can be painful at times, yet in the end there is joy. Been for tests this week have one more to come. Starting to feel as though things are under control.

    • Thanks Bj I hope you will also seek Jesus to confirm what I have shared which is also confirmed in Scripture. True Love in People like God has for us does not willingly afflict those they Love, as we see below and in (1Corinthians13) and in other Scriptures,

Deliberately Hurting others and planning to do so comes from Satan and Carnal Mankind not God and as proven Abuse brings Abuse but God does let us reap the evil we sow, it’s His discipline to bring us to Repentance like the Prodigal Son shows us but Wow what a Welcome Home!.

Lamentations 3: 33 For God doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the Children of Men.

Jeremiah 29 :11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of Peace and not of Evil, to give you a Future and a Hope.

  3. A beautiful message, Anne. This brought tears to my eyes. The barber analogy is brilliant! ❤ ❤ ❤

    • Thank you Anna for Visiting and Sharing and I Love the Hearts, I also add them now and again, I used the animated similes before but they don’t work anymore.

Yes the Barber is a very good analogy Anna, although it doesn’t give all the answers when I first received it years ago it made me stop and think. I had received other e-mails that said God deliberately hurts us, yes even puts us in an Oven and watches us burn, of course all sugar coated but sadly at the time not knowing anything different I sent them on. I hadn’t asked God for His Wisdom or Empowering in those days that came later. I did change the e-mails when I understood God’s Truth and sent them on again but no doubt others also believed error because of the first ones, which I asked forgiveness for.

  4. There is much evil in the world, and I agree that man influenced by the enemy.. the devil, is to blame for this, and God doesn’t treat us as puppets, so people are responsible for this chaos, It therefore takes those who are compassionate and righteous to help alleviate suffering whenever possible. We are His hands and His feet…
I believe also though that if God destined or allowed His son, whom he loved to be crucified on the cross because He knew that it must happen to redeem mankind and did not stop it…. then when Christians go through trials and he doesn’t stop it, even though it pains Him to see us going through, then does it not follow that ‘He though He did not create our trouble, He could miraculously remove/stop it, but He knows that .. to quote the Bible ‘ all things work together for good to those who love God… and that is the reason He does not remove our trials and difficulties from us… and therefore ‘allows’ them in our lives. Does that make sense? Diane xx

    • Very True Diane, when there is Suffering and Hardship it takes those who are Compassionate and Merciful to help alleviate suffering whenever possible. We are His hands and His feet and yes His Arms and Voice too.

God sent the Prophets but they didn’t listen to them and it was the same with Jesus but He knew His Father’s Heart would be broken if we were to Perish Eternally and so even knowing what it would Happen to Him , Jesus said; “Not my will but yours Father” they were both willing to pay the Price to redeem us, they Love us so much. It was not God who put Jesus on the Cross and separated them, it was our Sin but there was no other way for us to be set free and not be punished for the evil we did.

  5. For God to willingly afflict us and cause us to grieve means He is not a God of Love, Love can do no evil but yes He knows evil will happen but does not agree with it.

  6. Cristina says:

Thank you for your post Anne. This matter of why God allows pain and suffering in the world is one of the greatest challenges faced by Christians. The Bible teaches that God is Sovereign. There are many Scriptures that confirm God’s Sovereignty. Psalm 115:3, Isaiah 46:10, Daniel 4:35, Job 9:12 and many more.
God is in control of everything that happens. I rejoice in the knowledge that He is in control when trouble, pain and suffering visits my life. My God is in control not the devil, I know that He works all things after the council of His own will, Ephesians 1:11, and we know all things work together for good, Romans 8:28. God uses all things including pain and suffering for His own plans and purposes. Jesus the sinless Son of God suffered and died for us so that we can be reconciled to God. The story of job is a good example of pain and suffering and I love Job 42:1-6.
There will come a day when God will wipe every tear from our eyes and there will be no more death or sorrow or pain or crying for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4. We can rejoice with Paul the apostle when he wrote, for I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
    Many blessings 🌺

    • Sorry but I do not agree with you Cristina nor does the Scripture confirm what you claim, your understanding is not based on God’s Truth but on Man’s understanding and it seems you did not fully read my Message or you would have realized just how wrong you are in regard to how God and Satan works in our lives.

Lamentations 3: 33 For God doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the Children of Men.

Jeremiah 29 :11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of Peace and not of Evil, to give you a Future and a Hope.

If you believe Cristina that what I endured as a Child, see link below, was God’s will to make me strong than you do not know our God of Love, or His good will for us or do you also believe that He planned for me to have an Abortion when I was not yet 15 and to be raped by the Doctor who tricked me into having the Abortion and for my other 6 Children to die and also for my first husband to bash me repeatedly even during my Pregnancies and to also torture me having been badly abused himself as a child.

Did God also want me to be deceived as a young Teenager that I came from an Ape and to be told that He didn’t exist, so I would become a hurting and confused Atheist for almost 30 years, messing up my life with total disregard for the consequences of the wrong I did, after all being Happy Clappy was what it was all about.

Shall I continue Cristina, there is more but you can be assured that God does not willingly allow evil or plan evil to happen to us, He is Love and all good things come from Him not bad, please read my Post again asking for God’s Wisdom and Empowering and believing you have received them.

      Childhood –

      Christian Love Always – Anne.

      • Cristina says:

I am deeply sorry I hurt you Anne that was never my intention. In the light of what you have shared I will not continue to tell you my pains and hurts or how I learned to trust and depend on God. Once again do forgive me . I do not want to cause you anynore pain.

    • I Love you in Christ Jesus Cristina and that is Eternal Love, it comes from God not the flesh and He tells us to carry each others burdens and to even cry with each other, thank you for your Compassion for me, I feel the same for you.

We are The Body of Christ Cristina and are to be in agreement not argue or agree to disagree, they both as we can see by the different Denominations leads to division which Paul warned against.

I never water down God’s Truth to be approved or accepted by others and this is the same with Blogging and yes by some I’m hated and even in the Church but I do seek if others are willing to resolve our differences as God asks us to do and we Trust in Jesus our only Spiritual Teacher for His Truth not a Man or a Woman and what He says will be confirmed in Scripture but we need His Wisdom and Empowering to understand God’s Truth ( 1Corinthians 2:9-16).

To be honest with you Cristina, I also believed for years that God willingly did and allowed evil, I had received e-mails that confirmed this error and even sent them on, one said that He puts us in an Oven and watches us burn but when I asked God for His Wisdom and Empowering by The Holy Spirit, He showed me it was indeed error.

We are to Love The Lord Cristina with all our Heart, Mind, Soul and yes with our All, we cannot Trust someone in our Heart whom we believe will deliberately hurt us or willingly allow it even if we claim it’s for our good and if we don’t Trust we cannot Love, we will have fleshy fear instead and not reverence which is what God tells us about unbelievers and Carnal or Baby Believers.

Take Care Cristina and God Bless you greatly – Anne.

  7. There is suffering in the world because of the fallen nature of men. But if we have a relationship with God, some of these sufferings may be overcome.
But hardly would a Christian expect to escape suffer for Jesus sake. Thanks be to God who gives us victory.

    • Very True Victor, sad that some don’t know God’s heart of Love, I was told once that my 7 Babies went to Hell, I couldn’t understand why they would believe in a God who has no Compassion or who would judge a Baby so harshly.

Yes we will suffer if we follow Jesus as I shared in my Post but as you said Victor, we will have the Victory in Christ Jesus.

      Christian Love Always – Anne.
