What does it mean To Thine own self be True…..

What does God say … What does Man say…..

Regardless of what people think Shakespeare meant, the answer below was cited as the most popular response …..

It means to be true to yourself. Live your life for yourself and do not let others try to influence you to do things you don’t want to do.

What does God tell us……..

Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great Commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt Love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two Commandments hang all the law and the Prophets.

Philippians 2:4-6 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

With The Lord

Faith is all about Love for God and others, not fleshy worldly love for ourselves, we need to have Godly Love that comes from Jesus living in us, He knows our worth and reassures us we are His priceless treasure and that He delights in us, He Loved us first and what He calls good we do not discredit, our Love for ourselves is not to be fleshy but in recognizing who we are in Him and we can then recognize the same with others.

John 13:34- 35 A New Commandment I give unto you, That ye Love One Another; as I have Loved you, that ye also Love One Another. By this shall all men know that ye are my Disciples, if ye have Love One to Another.

Is it possible for us to be True to God and also true to self “above all”?a person true to self “above all” will not Love God with their All and will not Love others as Jesus did, He gave His all for us.

Jesus 8
God and others must come first, when it is all about ourselves than we are not really being True to us anyway, it is in giving that we receive…..

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

We are the Body of Christ, His arms, His hands, His feet, His voice to Minister,  care for and serve each other and then to reach out to a hurting world.

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

InHumility

Philippians 2:1-3 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of Love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my Joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same Love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

2Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in Peace; and the God of Love and Peace shall be with you.

1 Peter 3:7-9 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.

LOVE IS AN ACTION NOT JUST A WORD

Joy1 John 3:16-18 By this we know Love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the Love of God abide in Him? My little children, let us not Love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in Truth. ( N.K.J.V)

Philippians 2:4-6 Look not every man on his own things but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Putting others first, including our enemies, does not mean that we agree to being willingly Manipulated by their greed or wants, we do as God leads us to do and this will not be to allow ourselves or others to be controlled by the selfishness of those  who are living in the Carnal flesh, we are to hate all evil but we still continue to Love and pray for them and when lead to we also do good to them but not in their Worldly way but in God’s way.

Matthew 5:43-45 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven: for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.(KJV)

  1. Shakespeare’s statement is quite similar to the admonition to ‘follow your heart,’ which is very poor advice and completely contrary to the Word. Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Gotta stick to the truth in the Word.

    • Yes True disturbeddeputy the Carnal heart of flesh, is deceitful above all things and beyond cure, it must be put to spiritual death by The Holy Spirit, the evil hearts of fools even say that there is no God but it is very different with the Hearts of all of us who have had Heart Repentance and follow Jesus Christ, we have His Truth written on our Hearts and they are full of His Love because He first Loved us and Redeemed us but yes some will never be White or Spotless as the Scriptures below confirm.

Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified and made white and tried but the wicked shall do wickedly and none of the wicked shall understand but the Wise shall understand.

Titus 2:13-15 Looking for that blessed Hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ Who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto Himself a peculiar people zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

2 Timothy 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use and prepared unto every good work.

Which on the surface sounding like a great song and was very popular, but if you take the time to listen to the words, then you realise, it’s a self centred and strongly against God
As this a part where he sings, “And Not the words of one who kneels”

Thank you Anne and Ron. Thank you for the lovely scripture quotes. Loving one and other is simply the commandments summed up: do not lie, steal, kill, covet, commit adultery etc. Or like Carl D’Agostina so eloquently puts it, ‘Never be the source of anyone’s misfortune and never pass up the opportunity to perform a charitable deed.’ I love that! I also like the quote: Jesus first, others next and then yourself. Joy! Too easy.
    May you live forever

And just in case we forget, He also says when the Elderly walk into a room the younger ones are to stand up, that is how much respect we are to show the aged. I tell those younger than me, just a nod in reverence, instead of standing up will do! even if they are just a few days younger, one said in reply, she always does nod everytime she sits at the Computer to write a comment to me on my Blog, Lol

    • I’m sorry Mimi but I won’t be able to comment on your Blog anymore, you have changed the way we are to log on to comment and I had problems commenting that way before and so will not risk it again on Blogs. I also will not accept joking about people committing suicide or murder on my Blog, I do not find them funny or anything God calls evil funny, yes we are to be aware that evil happens and how to avoid it but joking about it is not the way.

God tells us to focus on what is good and True and that is why He also tells us to correct error and rebuke and warn those who sin in the Church, it is not Love to look the other way or to agree with the evil others say and do because Satan can get a foothold in their lives and cause them and others great harm. Jesus Loved everyone but rebuked those who were in error.

Philippians 4:6-8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

When God tells us not to judge others, He means by man’s fleshy understanding, we are to judge others in love and for Love, using His Truth as our confirmation of the evil they do but we are not to condemn them or judge their final destiny.

This is what I believe… God said it! I believe it! and that settles it!

Some Questions for you Mimi, also some Scripture and a link…

      1. Have you asked for God’s Wisdom, we were not Born with it and if you have do you believe Mimi you have received it ? and if you do believe you have, do you think what you share will be in error ? and do you think Jesus our Teacher would teach you error.?

Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

James 1:5-7 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

      2. Do you have the mind of Christ Mimi and if so do you think He would choose to sin or misunderstand what is God’s Truth or not know it. 1Corinthians 2:9-16

      3. Do you believe the The Holy Spirit says one thing to one person and something different to someone else when it contradicts.

1John 2:26-28 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

Colossians 2 :2 -3 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in Love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is True, and we are in Him that is True, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God, and eternal life.

Matthew 10:26-28 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops (KJV)

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you shall go. I will guide you with Mine eye.

Thank you Anne for pointing out to me that the comment section on my blog has changed. My daughter is in charge of this and made some changes, I’ll point it out to her. It’s no good if friends decide not to visit any longer because of this.

        1. Yes, like to think so, don’t think so, definitely not.
        2. That is for GOD to judge and not me. I can only follow the Holy Spirit’s directions the best way I know to. Jesus is without sin which is understood that he did not transgress GOD’s commandments.
        3. No. I believe that people read and interpret according to their understanding. Jesus spoke in parables and knew that many would not understand.

Jesus used parables to get his point across. I am sorry that you feel offended by the ‘joke’ I posted. I did not mean to offend you.
I certainly didn’t call anything God calls evil funny, or evil good or good evil and I don’t believe the joke is about that at all. Despite the backdrop the joke was not about suicide or murder other than figuratively speaking.
No-one was committing suicide nor was anyone being killed. In the story a ‘holier than thou’ is doing what they do best and that indeed is a tragic occurrence happening way too often.

I don’t profess to have wisdom (that is up to God to decide) I profess to read the bible every day, several times a day for more than a decade now. I apply the wisdom I find in the bible to the best of my ability with wonderful results for my family and myself.

I am sharing this with whosoever wants to hear.

You say that I call something what God calls evil funny and I did not do that. My whole post is illustrating the point that the joke is not funny but tragically illustrating how judgmental believers can be when their belief is not 100% alike.

I believe that you are a very kind and sincere person who has taken much time to share your wisdom with me and I am grateful for that.

I am truly sorry that you are offended by the post I made. It was not personal. I have two close family members who committed suicide, several who threaten to and have had people after my life. I don’t joke about those kind of things. The ‘joke’ I posted is sadly highlighting the intolerance of religious people toward each other when they are not in total agreement.

The ‘joke’ I posted talks about the hypocrisy of religious people. Jesus speaks a lot about the hypocrisy of the religious; he chastises the Pharisees and Sadducees because of their hypocrisy and warns his disciples against them. Jesus mentions the Samaritan story as another example of religious hypocrisy, and in Mark 9:38-40 and Luke 9:49-50 when his disciple John said, “Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.” Jesus rebuked John saying that “He that is not against us is for us.”

Thank you for your feedback Anne. I appreciate that you took the time to tell me what you thought of my post. I feel sad that you feel that way.

I finished my post by saying, I am just sharing my story, pls don’t push me off the bridge.

Let’s go easy on each other, “… be merciful as your Father is also merciful.” Luke 6:31-36

          Knowing God’s Truth – https://freedomborn.wordpress.com/2014/06/16/my-battle-with-confusion/

I agree with you Mimi, there is a lot of hypocrisy of religious people but I believe many are like I use to be, having no real understanding of what is needed to be Born Again of the Spirit and so yes I was the biggest hypocrite I knew at the time. I walked in defeat and didn’t even realize it untill the Devil got a strong foothold and put me into bondage that almost caused my death, as Jesus said, I had a form of Godliness but denied the Power or as Paul said I did the things I did not want to do! when he shared about the battle he had with his carnal flesh.

It was not my intention to hurt you Mimi, I think you have a beautiful heart and your Daughter too even if as she shared she feels confused at times . But I have learnt that regardless of the personal cost to myself I must stand up for God’s Truth and believe me I have made enemies doing so, even some who call themselves Christians but it seems they have no Love, because they slander and back-stab me, it is why Ron joined me on the Blog, although he only comments now but he did have his own Corner.

I have heard from Bloggers that the back stabbing continues, some also delete and ignore my comments, so yes I agree with you about hypocrisy in the Church but with understanding of why they do what they do and sadly I realize too as they put me down they are also putting themselves down but more importantly Jesus too, He tells us; as we treat others in His body, so we are treating Him.

But I do understand when some others are in error in their beliefs and teach them on their Blogs or in Churches, they are mostly not false teachers or wolves but just in confusion or deceived and I use to be too until I sought God’s Truth and asked for His wisdom and empowering by The Holy Spirit, not just for Spiritual gifts but for understanding of His Truth.

As I shared before Mimi I’m still learning but I have no doubt that what Jesus has already reveled to me is His Truth and I long to know more, I want to be fully Mature in His Love, but not by fleshy man made rules and regulations or in their own understanding but in God’s Truth and knowledge and by His guidelines.

              Blessings – Anne.

Believers are likened to a body. So if we take care of one another, aren’t we also helping ourselves? In the relationship between believers and unbelievers, believers should have joy in serving and helping the creation of God.

Reading the Scripture is not the same as understanding them , we need to know God’s heart too, I found 1Corinthians2:9-16 gives very good Light on this very important Truth. We are also to stand up for His Truth so that many will come to know and Glorify Him and in so doing be set free but sadly some will reject it and think it foolish as this Scripture tells us and also reject us or worse, Christians are already being Martyred in some Countries as Jesus Prophesied but they will be greatly rewarded.

I must admit I never saw any wisdom in this saying. If I am true to myself(mere mortal) I am a mess and so is everything around me. I am far too imperfect. And one must have a conscience as history is full of evil men that were certainly true to themselves.

To be true, I put my “self” aside and subordinate myself to Jesus. That is to what I must be true. Then it all works properly.

      • Was it the “I think you missed the point…” . one? If so, I was not offended. It did make some sense to which I would concede. Often criticism or the offering of alternative views modify my thinking whether mercilessly attacked or gently proposed.

On my own blog I usually let the “crazies” stand but if unkind, with profanity or offensive and hurtful – they get deleted. Surprisingly I have had to do that only a half dozen times in almost 1,100 posts. Seems a wonderful network of wholesome people has been created. I do participate in the theology blog All Along the Watchtower from England. The Catholic vs Protestant(I am Presbyterian but somewhat of a heretical one) debate of ideas can get fairly hard hitting but it is very gentlemanly most of the time. I also contribute religious ideas, cartoons Bible or literature or history based and other general humor there.

I am callused to such attacks anyway. I ran for public office a few times 30 years ago. If I was guilty of just 1% of the evil deeds of which I was accused and as presented publicly, I would have to be 900 years old !

40 years ago I almost left the US for Scotland to attend Presbyterian seminary but being honest I did not not wanting to be a hypocrite as I was too immature and “quite a man of the streets” and certainly no role model I remained a high school history teacher for 33 years in fairly violent and drug ridden minority schools. I am so dearly touched you would call me a Soldier of the Cross. I have 2 theology degrees but have put all the books aside now. My religion now is “Never be the source of anyone’s misfortune and never pass up the opportunity to perform a charitable deed.” That is all. If we can do this we are certainly in the embrace of our Lord.

        • Thanks for your reply Carl it is very much appreciated, in regard to this persons comment, which they contradicted later anyway, unless someone can confirm with Scripture their differences I do not accept man’s own understanding. In reference to Shakespeare he was not a practicing Christian or it would have been known and some claim he belonged to an Atheist group but regardless the person who commented here had no understanding of the flesh nature you shared about and which is confirmed in Scripture Romans 8 & 6 + others.

Like you Carl I have found most Bloggers to be respectful although I had some without Scriptural confirmation delete my comments and others ignore them which is rudeness if done deliberately. But I too have had those who have had genuine questions about the reliability of what I have Posted including Atheists and Cult members and I have not been offended but the same as I did with this person I used Scripture to confirm God’s Truth but even so we can’t force anyone to believe His Truth either and those without the Holy Spirit won’t understand it anyway, it’s just foolishness to them (1Corinthians 2:9-16)

You are indeed a Solider of the Cross Carl and yes a very caring man too, as seen by your actions not just your words.

We are not spurred on to respond to our own natural compassion for the unfortunate and unsaved. We will lose steam traveling down that road. We are love slaves responding with zeal to His command to “Go”. (john 14: 14-17) Thanks for provoking lots of good thought, Anne.

    • Thank you Doug for visiting and for your encouragement, I agree the Love that is complete is God’s, we must put our flesh to death by choosing to walk in the Fruit of the Spirit and we are than empowered by Him to do so and when we are Perfected in Love which Paul tells us we are to aim for, we have God’s seed or Nature, so we don’t sin and as you said , we Love as He does, yes Jesus is in us and we can be no other way.

Galatians 5:25 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

At one time in my Christian walk I realised I did not Love someone who was hurting me, I talked it over with The Lord, I don’t hear Him audibly like some others do but I do in my heart. Yes my fleshy love was gone but I knew we are to Love even our enemies, so I asked God for His Love for this person and I still Love them today even though they continue to hurt me….Nothing is impossible for God except evil and He also doesn’t force us to Love and obey Him , He does not want Puppets, it’s always our choice but having the mind of Christ we will choose to Love as you said.

    • So True JalMichael, can we ever thank God enough for His Love and Mercy, No it’s not possiable. Yes God’s wonderful Grace Halleluiah! but sadly self love promotes cheap Grace, as we know when we have Salvation we show we have, Love is an Action not just a word. Love does not hurt others especially God.

Thanks for visiting, I must come and visit you soon, I was resting most of yesterday, I will need to catch up today.

    • Thank you Ellie, there is so much confirmation in Scripture, it was not hard to share this message and at this time it speaks very strongly to my heart, Love is the greatest healer.

The Song A New Commandment on the video above, was one of the songs I learnt when I first started going to Church as an Adult and there were others similar, we were like one big family, it was a very Loving Church and I’m sure the worship in song, helped us to be very close to each other.

  14. Ron says:

Love for self taken to its extreme is narcissistic and to be avoided, Jesus said to love others as you love your self. But a healthy love of self as one who Jesus seemed or called worthy to die for. We could go to the opposite extreme as did the monks and others of medieval times, called themselves worms and hated their bodies and treated them like wise. No, Jesus calls us to respect ourselves and care for our bodies, in considering others more important than ourself. He called that one of the greatest commandments.

    • Thanks Ron, Loving others is Loving oneself, those who put other peoples needs first are secure in themselves but those who put themselves first and put others down for their weaknesses and shortcomings or puff themselves up thinking they are better or what they do is better, do great damage to their souls and need to be rebuked in Love and for Love, as a warning not to continue doing so.
