What is Plagiarism… Going by some people’s understanding, if we share or even e-mail a message or story or a saying, picture, poem, verse or idea if it does not give a reference to who wrote it, we will be committing plagiarism even if we don’t claim we are the Author, this is not correct.
It’s not just because someone thinks we have plagiarized, we need to have signed it with our name or claimed in some way that it is ours but if we have done this and it is also Copyrighted, we may be fined if taken to court and found guilty but many are not Copyrighted and so can be used freely.
We can’t answer for others but we never claim unless they are that the stories or messages, poems, ideas that we Post are ours and we correct those who think they are, this is also stated clearly in our About. But we don’t always mention when they are own compositions, so that they can be used freely without the need to contact us and this is why we don’t Copyright anything, we Trust God, we also don’t receive personal gain financially and we believe like everyone else we are answerable to God in what we share. But some do use what they earn to reinvest so they have the resources to spread the Gospel further as Paul did this with his tent-making.
We do correct error and rebuke or warn those who sin without repentance according to God’s word, but not by our own fleshy understanding or others, we do so in accordance to God’s guidelines in the Scriptures and in Love and for Love but that is not Saccharin sweet worldly love, if needed we will get the whip out like Jesus did not literally but we will be firm and to the point.
What happens when a Christian shares without citing the Christian who wrote it breaking Copyright , does that Christian then take them to court even though God tells us not to do this but that we are to privately resolve our differences and forgive others or should we as Christians who claim what we write is inspired by God not freely share but instead do as the worldly dictate but then we do realize sometimes it’s needed to publish.
Thankfully some Copyright does not apply if what is used is not for financial gain but the material must not be claimed as our own or that is Plagiarism, as Christians we need to obey the rules of the land if they do not conflict with God’s guidelines.
Does God give us Scripture in reference to plagiarism/ Copyright ? some claim Revelation 22:18-19 is talking about this but God was referring to changes being made to deceive, do we share messages to deceive others like false teachers or do we confirm everything with Scripture or do we Trust in our own understanding, logic, wisdom and reasoning or someone else’s, do we ask for God’s wisdom and seek Jesus Christ our only Teacher through the empowering of The Holy Spirit to teach us all things and do we have the mind of Christ and know what He knows. 1 Corinthians 2: 9-16
On this Blog ( see our About ) we have shared many stories collected over the years through e-mails there was no reference on most to where they originated but if there was we used it, we are still looking for some.
Because Checking on the Internet was very time-consuming and many times proved fruitless, it showed that some of the stories had also been used by others, and quiet a few times by different people but they too mostly had no reference as to who originally wrote them and some cited different Authors for the same message or Story . So can all these Christian men and woman be accused of having broken Copyright in their sharing Jesus Christ with others, if we go by the rules of the land and they were copyrighted by others, yes they can with some Copyright laws but not with all. What does God say….
Mathew 10: 7-8 And as ye go, preach, saying, The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
So is God telling us that we can’t earn an income from sharing the Gospel, no we have that freedom just as Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 9
We really believe what we have shared is God’s inspiration and not just our own understanding so we need to be willing to share it freely as it was given to us, this is what God asks us to do with all the gifts He has given us, we each make our own choices.
The world tells us we are to seek after recognition and financial gain, we are not saying these are prohibited but for many it is their only focus… God tells us as Christians they must not be our focus. Yes we are to encourage and uplift others but not to glorify ourselves or make money our god.
We can’t answer for anyone else but for us we now choose as Paul did a greater reward by not seeking to gain financially for ourselves or to seek for personal fame and glory from sharing God’s Truth and we trust God to provide for our needs, God’s work done in God’s way never lacks God’s supply.

Excellent Post, good points. I don’t think anything that can help others in life should be copyright. If it can be used for a greater purpose, it should be free to use.

Hi freeinchrist007 thank you for sharing and I agree with you , it is indeed true, freely we receive freely we give, Copyrite is a wordly concept and when used to stop the Gospel being shared is evil. Like your name it’s Truth that we are gifted to share God’s Truth freely not to keep it bound up.

Thanks Anne , hard call for some but I agree 1Cor 9 is the metre or rule book to use in this. As Paul said ,if they got paid well and good ,but he chose not to ; just the same response God will look after His own .

He does indeed Love but it is each persons choice what rewards they want earthly or Heavenly we have chosen to store up treasure in Heaven not earth, but we remember too some use what they earn to reinvest so they have the resources to spread the Gospel further.

Good points to bring out here where so much info is shared.
I try to verify the truth and accuracy of the accounts I use. There is usually no “author” information but I re-write them in my own words to avoid any problem.
Thanks for taking the time to research it.

Hi Angela it was not hard to find out this information but one thing that surprised me with Plagiarism is, if we claim anything as our own and signify it is so, even if we are just using other peoples ideas, it is still Plagiarism and with some Copyrights we can be sued.
I know I have used others ideas but I don’t sign my name to anything I have not written and apart from poetry not even those I have and we never Copyrite either.

When I was a younger pastor I was always concerned that I was preaching someone else’s material. The commentaries and references weren’t a problem. It was the other books I would read – sermon collections, various studies, etc. I’d prepare my sermon and frequently thought it would sound familiar. What I came to realize was that although it sounded familiar, I had made it my own. When I was writing in the technical world copyrights were very important. We went to great lengths to obtain permission to use source material. All that is said to say that from my point of view it is only proper to give credit where credit is due. When I use an “anonymous” piece I will at least explain how I came the piece. When I have a piece that obviously came from someone though anonymous I simply won’t use it. If the concept is useful for what I’m doing I’ll explain it my way in my words. So far, I’ve avoided problems with copyright issues.

Hi Brian, as you can see by what we shared we do not believe in Copyright and this is our choice, we don’t use it but as it is the law of the land we seek not to break it, but it is differant from Plagiarism where you have to sign it as your own or communicate that it is yours, Copyright is differant, although some does not apply if what is used is not for financial gain.
I would like to ask you Brian as a Christian if another Christian has used something you have Copyrighted, would you take them to court ? and how would you seek to resolve your differences by God’s guidelines or your own like someone did recently on our blog and would you like them, hold onto bitterness and resentment and continue your case against the person you think has done wrong upsetting them and others who should never have been involved in the first place and regardless of how it was sugar coated it was still gossip and slander.
Also if you really believe what you have shared is God’s inspiration Brain and not just your own understanding are you willing to share it freely as it was given to you, this is what God asks us to do with all the gifts He has given us but mostly with worldly people they want recognition and financial gain, I’m not saying these are prohibited but for many it is their only focus… God tells us as Christians it must not be our focus.
As for us sharing stories that are anonymous, poems, quotes or sayings, many do and many are blessed by them, is that good or bad. I have created over 200 Christian PowerPoint’s and e-mails and not signed any of them or Copyrighted them, their gifts to my friends and the world, they were all sent out on the Internet and I know others have done the same, they were given to us by God and we share them freely, sad if others reject them because of man made rules and regulations. But I agree if we know the Author of those we have received over the Internet, we give them the credit.

Hi Anne! Good post! All my posts are original. People used to steal my posts and post them on their blog or website. That is why I signed up for Free Copyright and now ALL my posts are copyrighted. Its pretty easy for me to come up with original posts as I read 10 chapters of the bible a day. One thing I would like to point out is that we can legally share verses and passages in the King James Bible as much as we want. So God DOES want us to share HIS word. HE always makes a way.

He Bob so good to see you back to Blogging we missed you and we look forward to your next post.
We like to share other peoples stories, and hope if they see them they are blessed by our doing so, God speaks to all His Children and many times both Ron and myself have been greatly blessed by what they have shared, it’s one reason why I enjoy blogging. I too have no problem writing original posts when lead by the Lord they just flow and over the years I have lost count of the number of Theology messages I have written but I have saved them and a lot of Ron’s too.
When I Post I try to find other peoples stories that reflect my own heart focus and when we share something Ron or I have written or created, we are happy if others wish to use them and if they claim them as their own, we consider that we have given them a gift, if they change them then they are no longer ours and they have lost the gift. We don’t like to limit people from sharing what God has given us freely, this is why we don’t Copyright, but it’s our choice we can’t tell others what to do, we just share a better way, also what happens if a Christian does break copyrite, do we then disobey God by taken them to court, or even if they are not Christians do we choose not to forgive them and we are to share freely with each other God’s blessings.
We mostly used King James, at first because it was the only one that was Public Domain now we use it because we have found it to be the most accurate with it being one of the closest to the original Greek but Most Translations now allow use of their Scripture but with a few restrictions.
Thanks again for sharing Bob – Christian Love Anne
