Teddy and Annie…..

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, like most Teachers, she looked at her Students and said that she cared about them they were all special to her.

However she knew that was not quiet right, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other Children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be very unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would make a big show of marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s and then putting a big ‘F’ at the top of his papers, she was also a little short with him in front of the class, this made her feel uneasy but he was such a difficult Child.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each Child’s past records and she put Teddy’s off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was very surprised.

Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is a bright Child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners… He is a joy to be around..’

His second grade Teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is an excellent Student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.’

His third grade teacher wrote, ‘His Mother’s death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his Father doesn’t show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.’

Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in School. He doesn’t have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class.’

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her Students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.

Mrs Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the Children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the Children’s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist.

Teddy stayed after school that day just long enough to say, ‘Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.’

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach Children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest Children in the class and, although she had once found him very hard to accept he became very close to her heart.

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best Teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished High school, third in his class, and she was still the best Teacher he ever had in life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he’d stayed in School, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from College with the highest of honours. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favourite Teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his Bachelor’s degree, he decided to go a little further and become a Doctor. The letter explained that she was still the best and favourite Teacher he ever had.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be Married. He explained that his Father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the Wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the Mother of the Groom.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his Mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Teddy whispered in Mrs Thompson’s ear, ‘Thank you Mrs Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.’

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, ‘Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to Teach until I met you.’

.Did this Story warm your heart as it did mine… Is it a True Story in some ways … How many of us can recall a Teacher who believed in us.

My story is different…with being Dyslectic when not much was known about this disability was very hard for me, I could not read or write or tell the time at 12 years of age and most had given up on me, but there was a Teacher in High School who believed in me and encouraged me to excel.

Two years later I came first in Home Economics much to the amazement of everyone accept my Teacher and this inspired me to try harder with my other subjects instead of being inattentive in class.

In my 3rd year final end of year exams I came first in nearly all the subjects and Dux in English in the Year with provision for Spelling, overall I was Second in the Year, my inability to do Maths letting me down. I received a reward but nothing could equal the feeling of being a someone who was worth the effort.

I Thank the Lord today for this Teacher and her patience and her belief in me as a person of worth and for The Lord who motivated her to take an interest in a very difficult Student and not give up.

My Mum like my Teacher was great too… many long hours of listening to me read and even though the budget was tight at the time Mum still sent me for Elocution lessons to help me speak clearly. Do you know … I’m also told I’m a good Cook, thanks to my Mum and my Home Economics Teacher.

Does all this mean I am no longer Dyslectic … No but I now thank the Lord for it, because you see with every Disability is a blessing, such is our Loving God’s Provision…

How very Blessed I am! – Annie

Not poem, I’m sorry, The story of Teddy.I think it is the most moving story about the influence of caring teachers I’ve ever read. It made me cry every time I read it. I made the children promise me that they would talk to me because they could trust me. Twice little girls came up to me after school and told me they were being abused by an uncle. I would hug them and tell them I would do everything in my power to stop it. I then turned it over to the nurse and she talked to the girls and got to the bottom of it and sure enough they were and were turned in to child protective services. One uncle was charged and sent to prison as he was a convicted child molester and he broke his parole by going to their house. Another uncle got time in Jail. Another little boy told me his brother beat him up every night before bed, and made him give him his lunch money for the next day. He hit him on the back and on the back of his head and stomach where the bruises wouldn’t show. They wound up doing all kinds of xrays and medical exams and he had multiple internal injuries. I believe that story is anointed and has power just in the reading of it. I could go on and on about the relation ships I was able to develop with the children in my classes each year because of this story. I was thrilled to see you post it.

        • It was wonderful Debbie that they could go to you when they needed help, as you read about in my early years, I too was molested and more than once from the age of 3, I did tell someone when I was 10 about what one of the men in the family had done to me but they called me a Slut, as though I had encouraged it so I was too scared to tell anyone else again until I was an Adult even though the Doctor who aborted my baby raped me when I went back for my check-up.

Debbie would you please not click the added Like after you have commented on my messages or I respond to your comment, it’s OK with the original Like up top but with WordPress annoyingly sending me two of every comment and now with extra likes as well, my Inbox is overflowing.

I used to be a school bus driver. Whenever kids were misbehaving on other buses they would move them to my bus what I found was that usually that most of the children who where terrible trouble makers actually were very troubled children who needed to be treated with love. sometimes as adults we get caught up in the misbehavior or we think children are lazy when actually there is an underlying problem I am so glad your teacher showed you kindness and encouragement. I tiny bit of encouragement can go a really long long way and actually is not so tiny in the end. good post Anne!

    • Your a very wise woman T in things that are important, like you shared, my frustration at being the dummy of the School meant I spent a lot of time on the School veranda, it was time out for bad behavior, when they realized I wasn’t retarded and that I actually had a high IQ they did seek to help me but it was not till my Home economics Teacher treated me as a person of worth that I responded.

I wonder T how many men and woman one day will think back and remember that kind caring Bus Driver who was nice to them, well done my friend.

  6. Wow! What can I say?
    Life is full of surprises.
Nothing is impossible as long as one dares to believe.
The stories you have shared, both of the boy, Teddy and yourself, are so beautiful and inspiring.
I personally believe that every single person on earth is created with certain exceptional potentials. It’s up to each to discover it, explore it and maximize it.
Very often, it takes a great teacher or just a caring heart, to bring out the best in another.
God always uses vessels that are yielded to him, to cause amazing transformations.
I am glad that God found you and distinguished you.
You standout in so many ways, Grannie.
    You are unique.
I’m looking foward to a lot more, because it only gets better.
With God, all things are possible!

    • Hi Son, thank you for visiting, I know how busy you are so I really do appreciate it and I agree with you, we are all made in the likeness of God and so we have incredible potential even the Mentally Challenged, some are very gifted, that is why I never talk down to them or Children.

Having a high IQ or even worldly learning and wisdom means nothing Eternally, it’s Godly wisdom that we need through the empowering of The Holy Spirit and some who are very clever and creative use their gifting for evil, as we can see with the Internet etc.

Even though they say I’m well above average, I made many mistakes and have been very foolish in life situations, when I came to heart repentance my focus changed, it was no longer worldly but I’m still a cracked vessel academically, some things like spelling and grammar I’m very bad at and I write backwards sometimes too but as I have shared before, God is The Super Glue and as far as He is concerned academic ability is not as important as seeking Him with all our heart even though many use it as a substituteit is their god and so they are very critical of others who they think don’t measure up.

Perhaps the Scripture below is a key to how to reach our full potential, what do you think Son?

2 Timothy 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Thank you for sharing Ron it must have been hard and a very humiliating time for you and I do believe not needed, you are a very intelligent man with great insight in regard to many things, to be treated like that is unacceptable, no child or Adult should suffer at the hands of someone who uses violence to achieve their purposes.

When the Scriptures talk about the rod of correction they are not meaning a physical rod but a Spiritual rod, to train up a child in the way they should go needs the leading of the Lord and His Loving correction shown in patience and compassion.

Well my dear friend Dru you would have made a great teacher ..never too late …Children need to learn about God and with your gift of creativity it would be such a blessing with the object lessons, also your a kind and caring person which is always needed in a teacher. I remember that our children today will see Jesus return in the clouds, with those of us who are still alive, we are the Generation who is seeing the Birth pangs all around the world that Jesus talked about, so those who are old enough to understand need to be prepared .

Thank you for your kind words, as I retell my life experiences and there is more to come, some sad, some awesome because they show clearly God’s Intervention, I can only say humbly, I have indeed been very blessed and so it continues everyday.

No one has ever said I was shy, perhaps there is a blessing in everything, I sometimes intimidate others by my demonstrative and outgoing personality, if I Love, boy do I show it in words and actions and I have just got to do something for that person to show them I care, as a child it was flowers, right now I think it’s comments and posts, but as I can’t remember ever hating anyone, I don’t know how I would respond if I did, although sometimes I have found it hard to forgive what they have done because of being so hurt when they have not been sorry and keep hurting me, memories come back so I give them to the Lord and He gives me His Peace.

I’m going to watch my step when I cross your bridge Lady D, perhaps I can find a Story on Bridges for you – Christian Love Annie.

Amen, Anne! If we could just get this right, how much more awesome our world would be. Jesus calls us to edify, to lift one another up. It’s much too easy to find all the faults in others, because not only do we all have them, but they stick out like sore thumbs. But as your post so greatly describes, it takes effort to be an encourager. But it is well worth it! Thank you, this one made my day. God bless.

I couldn’t agree more, MT. I have that same calling, to encourage others rather than criticizing them. Apostle Paul said, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” God knows how faulty we are in our accursed flesh, yet he shows us unlimited grace. The least I can do in response to His grace is to act graciously toward others, loving as I have been loved, forgiving as I have been forgiven, and serving as I have been served.

      • I believe in being honest Jim, perhaps I won’t get the whip out like Jesus did or speak forcibly to those who are Childish in the Church like Paul did but nor will I water down God’s Truth and if they reject it, I will shake their ignorance off my shoes like dust and move on in Love and yes no doubt I will be rejected or ignored but so are all those who choose to follow Jesus as He Himself said, only those who know and agree with His Truth will remain faithful to Him and each other even if it costs their reputation, popularity, friends, family and even their lives.

Perhaps some would call this a weakness Jim but I seek to Trust those in the Body of Christ when I meet them, they don’t have to earn it but yes I have been deceived and hurt and tricked too but in the end it will be them who will be asked why not me.

In reference to your statement in your comment Jim, would you be willing for me to share with you God’s Truth in regards to it that not many seem to know about or they reject it and yet it is confirmed much more than once in Scripture and was taught in the early Church and perhaps in some Churches is still being taught today.

  15. This brought back some memories. In 6th grade I was kind of a clown, really smart, but never taking my studies seriously. Mrs Lugori told me if I got an A on my health exam, she would take me to lunch at Mc Donalds. Needless to say, I not only got an A, I got an A+. That Friday, when it came to go to lunch, Mrs Lugori did not show up. I got called to the Principals Office and was told Miss Lugori had died. Apparently she had been suffering from cancer for a long time. Then he handed me an envelope. In the envelope was a note saying how proud she was of me and apologizing for not being able to make lunch, and there was a $5.00 bill for lunch. That was many years ago. From that day on, I never slacked in class. I went on to graduate from High School with Highest Honors and I carried a 3.79 GPA (Grade Point Average) all through college. I never spent that $5. I still have both it and that note and the original envelope to this day. Thanks for the trip down memory land Anne! God bless!

A wonderful story, Annie. I think we all have teachers who were kind and taught us many things. It is heart-warming to hear of teachers who put out special effort for those children with disabilities, either emotional or physical. My youngest daughter is dyslexic and her first grad teacher recognized it and put her in special classes to help her. We owe a great deal to teachers like that. It would be a great world if we had more like them.

Yes very True Gramma Velta we do need them but even a bad Teacher can learn as this Story shows but Love and compassion has to be in the heart in the first place, God draws His Children who have His seeds and He waters and harvests them through His Love by the empowering of the Holy Spirit who is working in our lives to bring us to heart repentance so we will bear good fruit.
