At times Nature can seem to be cruel, as Animals respond to their need for food or to protect their territory. Animals are very different to Humans in that they don’t follow Moral or Ethical codes but respond to their instincts and their need to survive.
Although they can be taught appropriate behaviour their actions are based on their circumstances. If attacked they will defend themselves, when shown kindness and Love they will respond with trust, loyalty and affection.
The Alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the “apex predator”, can still fall victim to implemented ‘team work’ strategy, made possible due to the tight-knit social structure and “survival of the pack mentality” which is part of the canines instincts.
See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine.
Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the Alligator preventing it from escaping , while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third dog holds him down with his paw on the soft underbelly of the Alligator.
Not for the squeamish!
Love those puppies.
